Most of our students swim year-round and register for sessions well in advance to keep their preferred class time.
Q.Why isn’t my lesson time held for me in future sessions?
A. Our class times are reserved on a first come, first served basis. You can secure your lesson time by registering. While we make every effort to remind you it is time to re-register, it is ultimately your responsibility to secure your spots well in advance to avoid losing them.
Q.Can I cancel a class? What happens if I miss a class?
A. Life happens, we get it! Swimmers are eligible for 2 make-up classes each session due to an absence. Please note that make-ups are based on schedule availability. You can book your make-up lesson as soon as you can and it can be used anytime while enrolled with us. Q.Why should my child swim year-round?
A. Swimming is an important lifesaving trained skill and the best way to protect your child from the very real dangers pools and any open body of water can present. Year-round swimming benefits your child by building muscle, aiding coordination, and developing and retaining lifesaving water safety skills.
Q.Does my child need a swim diaper?
A.To ensure our pools safe and sanitary, it is our policy that all children under the age of 4 must have 2 cloth reusable swim diapers or a combination of a cloth swim diaper along with trunks or a bathing suit with the swim diaper built-in. Even if potty-trained, accidents can happen. Disposable swim diapers alone are not permitted. We offer reusable swim diapers for sale in our lobby. Stop by our front desk and we'll help you find one that fits your child perfectly.
Q.Will I have the same teacher every time?
A.We will make every effort to maintain consistency with your child’s teacher. However, scheduling conflicts or illnesses do sometimes occur and you may be given a substitute teacher. By working with your child, the substitute can give you a fresh prospective of your child’s progress and expose your child to another teaching style and technique that may be beneficial.
Q.If my child cries, doesn’t want to go in the pool without me, or is afraid – should I still attend?
A.Please remember that this is a new experience and it will take some time for your child to adjust. Freestyle Swim and you, as the parent, must become partners, with a mutual goal to get your child to become comfortable and responsive to the water in a positive way. Even if your child is crying, keep in mind that they will still be learning. Similar to learning your ABC’s and 1,2,3’s, learning to swim takes patterning and repetition. Our teachers are trained to work through the tears while making each lesson both fun and productive.
Q.How long is each lesson? How often should my child attend?
A. Each lesson is ½ hour long (30 minutes) for kids under 8 years old at our Long Island location, 1 hour long (60minutes) for kids over 6 years old in our Queens location. and students usually attend 1-2 lessons each week. We encourage all swimmers to attend classes on regular weekly schedule. Consistency and frequency are important factors in retaining and progressing your child's swim skills.
Q. What happens if my favorite instructor is moved to a different lesson time?
A. Sometimes our instructors need to change lesson times to accommodate their own life schedules. However, we can assure you that all of our Freestyle Swim instructors undergo a thorough hiring process and an extensive training period. You can trust that they’re all fun, patient, and more than qualified to ensure the safety of our swimmers.
Q. Can I request my child’s lessons to be taught by his or her favorite teacher?
A. While we cannot make any promises, we’ll certainly take your requests into account and try to accommodate your preferences as best as we can. We understand that different students respond to different teaching styles and we’ll make sure your child has the opportunity to receive the full learning experience.
Q. Do I need to change classes when my child changes levels?
A. It depends! We will do our best to help you keep your same day and time when your child advances a level. If we can’t, we will work with you to find a new day and time that fits your schedule.
Q. How do I change the date and time of my lessons?
A. Our front desk team would be happy to adjust your lesson schedule for you. You can also check back with us as often as you’d like to see if more convenient lesson times are available.
Q. What happens if my child is less (or more) advanced than the other children in his or her class?
A. Don’t worry. Our attentive instructors pick up on skills differences very quickly and are aware of the abilities that your child needs to have in order to maintain placement at his or her level. We understand that everyone learns in their own ways and at their own pace, which is why our instructors observe and adjust teaching methods as needed. We’re constantly evaluating our students and are very flexible when it comes to working with each child’s individual strengths and weaknesses.
Q. If I need to withdraw, will my preferred time, day and instructor be available when I return?
A. While we cannot guarantee that there will be an available spot at your preferred day and time with your favorite instructor, we’ll do everything we can to work with your schedule and preferences. We recommend that you remain enrolled, even if you do miss a few lessons. We offer make-ups for the classes you do miss and your child would benefit more from some swim lessons rather than none.
Q. Why does my child have to learn to float before they start “swim” lessons?
A. The back float is the ultimate survival skill. A child floating on their back is able to breathe and cry for help. As students advance, this skill is also necessary. If they get tired while swimming, they will know to roll over to rest and catch their breath. Open bodies of water do not have a “side” to get to, so this is the best way to ensure safety. We always teach our swimmers to be fully swim safe in our survival lessons before they can even move on to our swimming lessons for most kids who under 6 years old.
Q. What kind of training do your instructors have?
A. All of our Instructors have completed our intensive Freestyle Swim School Instructor training and exams. They also have a national Lifeguard and First Aid Certification.
Q. What is the earliest age I can enroll my child to learn to swim?
A. For our Long Island location the earliest age is 8 weeks, please call 516-279-4445 to get more information.
For our Queens location the earliest age is 6 years old, please call 718-445-7665 to get more information.
Q. What if my child is afraid of the water?
A. Our instructors are well trained for managing this, and our classes are planned to help all children acclimate to and be comfortable in the water before we work on developing their skills. We work really hard in our lessons to be sure that any fears a student has turns into confidence in the water.
Q. Is there anything I can do at home to help my child’s learning progress?
A. Yes, practicing at home will help tremendously! If you have a pool at home, you should practice swimming as much as possible. If you do not have a pool, many skills can be practiced in the bathtub. Feel free to ask our front desk to get more information about how to practice at home.
Q. How do you teach babies as young as 3 months old to learn swim survival skills at such a young age?
A. There is a huge and well documented benefit to getting children into swimming lessons at a young age. We know that children (and adults) learn best with repetition and fun. Repeating activities within our structured swim class, while engaging swimmers, also releases endorphins which helps increase muscle memory.
Q. Do you offer lessons for adults?
A. Yes, we do have a fantastic adult program which is organized to focus on the needs of the individual swimmer. Please contact Freestyle Swim School at Queens location for more information. 1-(718)-445-7665
